What is the Design Quotient (DQ)?

The Design Quotient is a way of describing the added value that great design brings to a project—beyond the basics of functionality and cost. It’s the intangible quality that makes a space feel special, memorable, and distinctive.

Think of it as the difference between:

  • A building that simply works, and
  • A building that inspires, connects, and elevates the experience for its users.

Why is it Important?

Most project metrics focus on measurable things like:

  • Budget
  • Timeline
  • Square meters

But DQ is about non-quantifiable benefits, such as:

  • Sense of Space: How does it feel to be there? Calm, vibrant, welcoming?
  • Emotional  Impact: Does it create pride, joy, or a sense of belonging?
  • Uniqueness: Does it  stand out from competitors and reflect cultural identity?
  • Brand Value: Does it strengthen the client’s reputation and attract people?

These qualities often influence how people use and value a space—sometimes even more than the practical aspects.

How to Communicate DQ

Since it’s hard to measure, as your Architect and design team, we need to articulate the benefits clearly:

  • Show how design choices create a better experience (e.g., natural light, flow,  cultural integration).
  • Use visuals and storytelling to convey the “feel” of the space.
  • Position it as a strategic advantage: great design elevates the project, attracts users, and adds long-term value.

For a developer and investor, the DQ will add intangible value, through enhancing a space which creates demand as you describe and as such is measurable through enhancing the financial returns over and above an ‘ordinary’ development.

In Short

The Design Quotient is what turns a functional building into a place people love. It’s the magic that makes your work stand out—and it’s a key point of difference for our practice.
