About

Inspired by cherished childhood summers spent camping and bonding around the campfire, a family envisioned creating a new bach that would encapsulate those nostalgic memories of endless summer days, connections, and storytelling.

Determined to preserve the existing house site, the original summer cottage was relocated nearby to make way for the new construction.

Keeping the family's vision at the forefront, two distinct pavilions were conceived—one for living and the other for sleeping—crafted from sturdy materials such as concrete, steel, and glass. Expansive sliding doors seamlessly merge indoor spaces with the lush lawn and rugged coastal views beyond.

The sleeping quarters lead out to a sunken communal area featuring a fireplace, evoking the cozy ambiance of a campsite gathering, fostering relaxation, togetherness, and a sense of security. Flexibility is key, with large red sliding doors allowing occupants to either embrace the campsite vibe or retreat into private sanctuaries for tranquil repose.

Initially conceived as a weekend retreat, the allure of everlasting energy and fond summer memories has prompted the owners to make it their permanent residence.

Drawing inspiration from the surrounding environment, the design pays homage to Aotearoa, the Land of the Long White Cloud, evident in the horizontal roof forms reminiscent of tents, supported by vibrant red tent poles. Textural intrigue is achieved through polished concrete aggregates and salvaged natural timbers, accented with bursts of crimson from the iconic New Zealand Pohutukawa Tree - a beloved choice of the clients.

Complementing the Matakana Bach are the Boat House and Guest House. The Boat House caters to practical needs with its functional layout while maintaining the campsite theme from the main dwelling. Nestled in front of the boat house, the Guest House basks in sunlight and panoramic sea vistas, featuring living and sleeping areas that seamlessly extend onto the lawn. Consistent with the main house's aesthetic, polished concrete floors and Pohutukawa red accents create a harmonious extension for guests to relish.‍
