About

Built in the early 1900s, this Mt Eden villa was in desperate need of some care and attention. The new owners wanted to create a family home with generous, modern living spaces to see them through their children’s teenage years and beyond. Although modernizing the space, it was essential that the character of the villa was not compromised.

Insensitive alterations in the 1960s had disconnected the house from the back yard. The design sought to resolve this issue, and return natural light into the homes interior. An existing lean-to was replaced by a new split-level addition, creating much needed space. By utilsing the subfloor area we were able to re-orient the main living spaces towards the north and west.

The ground level of the new addition features a large kitchen and living area. The upper level houses the master bedroom, ensuite and library. The two spaces are connected by a large, airy atrium, allowing natural light to flood into the space. Expansive bi-folding doors open up onto the outdoor entertainment area, creating easy access to the new pool, deck and gardens.

“Our dream was to create a spatial juxtaposition between a traditional villa and what was behind the front door. We have achieved this by extending a 140sqm traditional villa with a modern renovation that meets the needs of a growing modern family, incorporates good design and all the comforts of a new build, and delights with the wow factor of the atrium. We especially love our outdoor living that flows seamlessly through to the deck and swimming pool.”
