MASSEY LIBRARY
Masterplan and concept for a library, leisure and aquatic facility with the final award winning complex incorporating a multi purpose sports hall, fitness centre, crèche, library, kitchen, function rooms and administration offices. The building was awarded a NZ Premier Creative Spaces Award.
When the Waitakere City Council commissioned the design of the new Massey Library and Leisure Centre there was a strong emphasis on the use of sustainable resources and environmentally friendly building practices.
In meeting this philosophy the building design features rain water collection, evaporative cooling over an entrance pond and an abundance of high level natural light and ventilation. Concrete thermal mass floors suspended over underground ducts draw air in that has been cooled by the water and light unpainted natural zincalume roofing and cladding reflects unwanted heat gain.
Presentations at community board meetings were an integral part of both stages.
