6 BASQUE ROAD
Pacific Environments were given a unique opportunity to design our own studio space.
This came about when we introduced a developer to a site and said we’d be keen to rent the top floor if they let us design the building – we’ve now been in our space for 4 years!
Our space is typical of modern collaborative office spaces, with shared office space, meeting rooms, an informal staff kitchen/meeting space, display space, resource space, and storage. Upon entering you are greeted by an airy, colourful space, with lots of light. A twisted cardboard light feature hovers above, and there is a lineup of Treehouse-playhouse prototypes in the kitchen corner. Lots of natural light and the high ceilings create a fantastic space for our open-plan desk arrangements.
As this is our own office, we treat it as a test space for things we might like to develop or specify for our clients – lighting panels, acoustic treatments, CO2 monitoring equipment…
The staff kitchen is fully exposed to the entrance and is used all day long as both the kitchen and a meeting room. Quick meeting around the kitchen table with a hot coffee anyone? Initially there was some hesitance but it is now used by both staff and clients, with visitors comfortably helping themselves while they wait for a meeting. The kitchen has a full wall of windows looking out onto the trees outside – it’s a rather unique location with a mix of industrial and residential and park space.
The building is used as a basis for our low energy comfort Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) initiatives. The building has good natural lighting, ventilation, minimal heating and uses sustainable materials and furnishings. The space is performing well –remaining comfortably cool in summer, and warm in winter, with little air conditioning use.
For no capital cost premium per square metre, electricity costs have halved compared to the previous building we occupied – even though we are in a space almost double that of the old office!
During this journey we’ve seen the architecture process from a unique perspective – as the architect working with our client, and as the architecture client ourselves with the fit out, but also being a bit more personally involved with the client – after all, we wanted a fabulous building to call home!
The Pacific Environments office at 6 Basque Rd was awarded 4.5 stars on the NABERSNZ rating for June 2016-June 2017.
