5 - RNZN Training Centre, Whangaparoa

This project involved the master planning of an existing site to replace existing galley, dining room, class room and dormitory facilities while keeping the training centre operational.
The new building form wraps around a sunny outdoor area to provide shelter from the strong south westerly winds the site is exposed to and to make use of passive low energy solar heating strategies on exposed concrete floors.
The design is modular which provides budget economies in terms of repetitive building elements.
In addition to the passive solar heating strategies other environmentally sustainable features include:
• Passive low energy natural day lighting and ventilation through high level clerestory windows
• Solar water heating backed up by instantaneous gas water heaters
• Rainwater collection for toilet flushing
• Low flush toilets and low flow tapware.
• High efficiency lighting
• Solar shading
