4 - Grey Lynn Community Centre
Pacific Environments Architects was approached by MPM Projects Ltd, on behalf of Auckland City Council in 2006 with a request to provide architectural services for the refurbishment of the Grey Lynn Community Centre. Originally completed in 1999, the multi-purpose building was designed to meet the existing needs of the community, plus limitations of site and budget. The original design allowed for future expansion within the existing ceiling void.
To develop the first floor spaces so as to provide additional usable space of approximately 70m2, including a large function room, two small meeting rooms, kitchenette, accessible washroom and storage space. A disability access audit recommended that the existing stairs be redesigned so as to comply with the Code, plus allowance for the installation of an accessible passenger lift between the two floors. Additional work included refurbishment of the existing washroom spaces and repainting of both the interior and exterior.
The project was successfully completed a the close of 2007 in conjunction with Fletcher Construction Interiors. A number of architectural features were incorporated into the design including a new glazed balustrade system to the existing stair, a stained timber screen wall to the first floor lift lobby and ventilating louvres in the new function room to allow for passive ventilation. Feedback from the client and community centre users has been nothing but positive.
