3 - Tristar Gymnasium Regional Gym Sport Centre

This commission was for the redevelopment and additions to the existing Tri Star Gymnastic Club facilities to accommodate Regional Gym Sport competition. The Auckland City Council was a major funding partner to the project and as the facility is located on Keith Hay Park took a keen interest in the design of the new building.

There were very specific requirements, in addition to the District Plan, by the Auckland City Council for the siting of the proposed new facility. Prior to our engagement as architects to this project the Council had developed a Concept Plan for the redevelopment of Keith Hay Park which had been through the community consultation process and adopted by the Council. The plan form of a new development for Tri Star Gymnastics included on the Concept Plan was hypothetical in that there had been no consideration of a detailed brief for the new gym facility. As the Auckland City Council was a major funding partner, there was the need to design into the development community meeting rooms and facilities in addition to those facilities necessary for the gymnasium. The approved Concept Plan for the Park had been the basis on which we were required to conform as far as reasonably possible for the new facility. Those restrictions, along with the size of the building to suit the client brief have dictated the sitting of the building. Initially, the existing adjacent Scout Hall was to be retained which as a building is a real anomaly on the site. During the construction period the Scout Association decided to relinquish their lease over the building. Tri Star Gymnasium have taken over use of the building on a temporary basis. The building is planned for demolition in the future.

Notwithstanding the Auckland City Councils financial involvement in the project Tri Star Gymnasium had to conform to all the regulatory requirements demanded by the District Plan and the NZ Building Code. During the project a Council Project Manager was in attendance at site meetings as required.

The new facility is to be constructed in 2 stages. Stage 1 works, now completed, include all ground floor facilities, with the exception of some ablution facilities and a store room / stair on the north face, so visually there will be little change to the exterior of the building following the initial stage 1 works. Stage 2 works will consist of the full development of the first floor area into community rooms, lounging areas and a small café and access to the south of the main gymnasium into which is to be constructed tiered seating on the upper level to provide spectator viewing.

Construction value Stage 1 at 2006 - $3,000,000.00
