3 - Cape Reinga Visitor Centre
The proposals is to build an interpretation centre away from te ara wairua (path of the spirits) on the south-west side of the hill now known as Pae Rehua. This will be the principal reception point for visitors to Te Rerenga Wairua and it is here that visitors will have the chance to be welcomed to this sacred site. They will be able to hear firsthand Ngati Kuri, Te Aupouri and other iwi accounts of Te Ara Wairua and Te Rerenga Wairua and its ongoing significance as a wahi tapu.
This is a technically challenging site of outstanding beauty and ruggedness, located at the tip of NZ, this site required the establishment of infrastructure, including parking, self supporting public facilities, water supply and storage, storm & wastewater treatment, and power generation, along with extensive sculpting and landscaping of the site to reduce human impacts.
The proposed building features interpretation and display as integral components of the fabric and structure, along with features like mixed mode passives / active ventilation, solar screens and natural day lighting.
