New Library and Computer Suite
Commissioned 1996
Completed 1997
The existing library at the School was a standard MOE relocatable library which, in 1993, had a small addition completed.
The existing library was well site centrally in the school campus.
The Schools brief for the new building was for a major addition to the existing library to provide new and expanded library space, library workroom and conversion of the existing library to a computer suite.
In addition the brief required that the library have independent access to existing toilets the the adjacent classroom block to provide for “out of normal school hours” use.
The design of the new building had externally to be bold and provide a “statement” within the campus, be welcoming and internally to provide calm and relaxed areas within the library and a link to the computer suite.
Externally the building was clad in contrast to the surrounding timber clad classrooms with metal cladding and plastered spline wall. Internally the space was relieved by providing visual escape to the exterior into small planted courts providing a relaxed environment.
The large volume created within the building allows for passive high level and low level ventilation therby providing a pleasant working environment for staff and puplils throughout the year.
The project was completed on time and on budget.
