1 - sileni estates winery Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
The Sileni building built on the Sileni Estates Vineyard has been designed to completely encapsulate the wine making operation while simultaneously providing the public with easy participation in the wine experience. This new winery at Maraekakaho Road, Bridge Pa, Hawkes Bay was commissioned in May 1998.
The simple building forms of the Sileni Winery, part clad in local river stone compliment the natural surrounding landscape of Hawkes Bay. The building is divided into two main components namely an operations area and a commercial area.
The operations area , which includes the tank farm is located under a central high roofed form with working cellars and warehousing located under the lower roof extensions. Abutting the working area is the commercial area that includes the library, administration offices, wine makers office, laboratory, restaurant and an education/marketing area. This commercial area rises over four levels from three subterrain barrel cellar spaces to the Library and meeting rooms which have panoramic views over the vineyard and neighbouring landscape. The restaurant and marketing areas overlook two mid level barrel halls and the stair landing provides views of the tank farm at various levels.
The entrance portico is formed from an extension of the tank farm roof vault, creating a very high atrium space with visual links to all commercial activity.
Landscaping has been integrated into the overall design and incorporates many services such as waste disposal and water collection.
